Smart unveils the #1 (Hashtag One), a 4.27 m long all-electric urban SUV that features a 272 hp asynchronous motor powered by a 66 kWh battery that promises 440 km of autonomy. Orders are expected to begin in July 2022.
Smart, the former subsidiary of Daimler now 50% owned by the Chinese manufacturer Geely, continues its reorientation and presents a new all-electric urban SUV, the #1, which will be pronounced “Hashtag One”. During IAA Mobility, the mobility fair held in Munich in September 2021, part of the Mercedes stand was devoted to the presentation of this concept car. Today, the manufacturer, which was the first to abandon combustion engines in favor of electric ones, is back on the front of the stage with this SUV with smooth and refined shapes.
With its 4.27 m long, it will try to make people forget the small two- and four-seater city cars that have made Smart famous. With a wheelbase of 2.75 m, the # 1 will rather seek the side of Peugeot e2008, ID.3 and other Niro. Moreover, the trunk volume should be between 323 and 411 l, while that of the ID.3 is content with 385 l.
75% of on-board computers will be OTA compatible
The design is largely identical to that of the concept presented at the IAA, but elements such as the antagonistic doors or the individual rear seats have been sacrificed on the altar of industrialization. Inside, we generally find the sleek and modern design of the concept, with a floating center console and above all a large 12.8-inch touch screen (resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels). The in-house developed Android-based infotainment software allows OTA updates and offers different profiles and preference adjustments for travel, navigation, climate control and interior ambience. Most of the car’s functions can be adjusted and set on the screen.
A 9.2-inch Full HD digital counter and a 10-inch head-up display are also included.
In terms of driving assistance, the #1 fits into the current mold by offering adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go function, lane change warning, blind spot detection system, driving assistance in traffic jams, automatic parking assistance and adaptive high beam assistant, among others.
440 km range
At the driving level, the Smart #1 is based on Geely’s SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform and tries to position itself above the ID.3 with a 272 hp synchronous motor powered by a 66 kWh. The latter promises 440 km of autonomy. The maximum charging capacity is given for 22 kW in alternating current and 150 kW in direct current, which would allow a charging time of 30 minutes to go from 10 to 80% in direct current and 3 hours in alternating current.
For the moment, the prices have not been revealed, but the Smart #1 should appear on the roads from January 2023.
