Smartphone and contactless payments exploded in 2022


The French are less and less hesitant about the idea of ​​paying with their smartphone. A recent report by the BPCE group reveals that the amount of expenditure made in this way increased by 163% in 2022. The same is true for contactless payment, although more timid with growth of 23%, largely supported by habits taken during the pandemic.

If mobile and contactless payments have existed for several years now, it is only since the start of the pandemic that these two technologies have really become part of the daily life of the French. The latest report from the Banque Populaire-Caisse d’Épargne (BPCE) group illustrates this very well. It is a real exponential growth that they have been experiencing since 2020.

Smartphone payment is the more impressive of the two. Since 2021, the amount of expenditure made in this way has literally exploded, increasing by 163% in the space of one year. technology has effected a gigantic leap of 1128% compared to 2019, proof that Google and Apple have won over users with their respective solutions. On average, they now spend 23 € with each mobile payment.

The other big winner of this study is of course contactless payment, which has become widely democratized since 2020. With the start of the pandemic and the passage of the ceiling to €50, these had already increased by 85% in 2020. Two years later, growth is still on the agenda with an increase of 23% spending compared to 2021. On average, the French spend 17 € contactless payment, mainly in neighborhood shops.

This evolution necessarily leads to the progressive disappearance of the liquid. If the drop is not catastrophic (only 8% less withdrawals since 2019), these are becoming less and less frequent and are especially popular with an older population. Payments by classic cards, for their part, are still on the rise: +12% in 2022for ever lower amounts.
