Smartphone sales continue to fall, Apple is doing better than Android

The latest report from Counterpoint Research confirms the trend that has been emerging for several months. All over the world, smartphone sales are collapsing, with a 14% year-on-year drop in the last quarter of 2022. In this fall, Apple is still doing better than Android, especially in the markets the most importants.

It has been the same for several months. Smartphones are selling less and less well, a direct consequence of the shortage of components and inflation which shrinks wallets. In the last quarter of 2022, sales even broke a sad record in Europe, falling 24% compared to the previous year. As expected, the figures at the global level are not much better.

As the latest Counterpoint Research report reveals, manufacturers sold 14% fewer smartphones in the last quarter of 2022, compared to the same period the previous year. Moreover, although Samsung recently reclaimed its title of global market leader from Apple, the Cupertino company is posting far better scores than any Android competition — or, at least, a less drastic drop.

Apple sees its smartphone sales drop, but less than the competition

In effect, Apple sales fell 12% in the last quarter of 2022, while those of Android smartphones decreased by 16%. A lead that the manufacturer owes above all to the Chinese market, in which it has been scratching more and more shares from Huawei since its exit from the Android ecosystem, especially in the premium segment. Despite a slight rise for the firm, it fails to regain its former glory.

This is not trivial, knowing that China is one of the biggest vectors of sales for manufacturers on Android, as well as India where, again, Apple is doing better than the competition. The manufacturer continues to gain market share within the country, which is gradually turning to more expensive smartphones, effectively abandoning mid-range models, where Android reigns supreme.
