The secret is already largely out and known to owners of Android smartphones: as soon as they are purchased, high-end Android smartphones quickly drop in price (especially compared to Apple’s iPhone). However, a recent report from SellCell, the main American site for the recovery of telephones and technological products, shows how brutal this fall can be – even dizzying in some cases.
The company analyzed sales data for the iPhone 13, Samsung Galaxy S22 and Google Pixel 6 smartphones, looking at the trade-in value of all models in each respective range during the first two months after the handsets were launched. All smartphones included in this study were considered to be “like new” or “in good condition”.
The results are terrible, to say the least, for Samsung Galaxy S22 and Google Pixel 6 owners. Samsung Galaxy S22 smartphones thus lose 51.1% of their value when sold “in good condition” two months after their sale. launch, and 46.8% of their value when sold “as new”.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max, a safe haven?
Samsung’s flagship smartphones are followed by Google’s Pixel 6 smartphones, which lose 43.5% of their value when resold “in good condition” and 41.5% when sold “as new”. The iPhone 13 fared better, yielding only 16.4% and 19.1% of its value whether it was sold “in good condition” or “like new” two months after its launch.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus 5G (128GB) stands out with the highest depreciation. The latter thus lost, two months after its marketing, 57.5% of its value “in good condition” and 53.8% “like new”. At Google, it is the Pixel 6 Pro (256 GB) that loses the most value two months after its launch, with losses estimated at 47.9% (“in good condition”) and 45.7% (“like nine”), a drop of up to $479. For its part, the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max (128 GB) lost only 4.7% (“in good condition”) and 3.8% (“like new”) in the two months following its launch.
As you will have understood, a Samsung Galaxy S22 can lose almost two thirds of its value in two months. This is an astonishing level of depreciation for a device whose price is so high… enough to make all potential buyers of this smartphone, which is also ultra-efficient, wonder.
