Snap Inc. (Snapchat) lays off the 70 employees of French Zenly

BRIEF // In difficulty, Snap Inc. is coping as best it can. Evan Spiegel has decided to separate from the employees of Zenly, a French app acquired in 2017 and serving as the basis for the Snap Map.

Bad news for Zenly employees. In an email dated Wednesday, September 1, the CEO of Snap Inc., Evan Spiegel, announced the upcoming closure of the application purchased by the American group in 2017. 70 employees are thus leaving, out of a total of 1,200 planned job cuts within the Snap entity. However, the company does not plan to resell Zenly, in order not to play into the hands of a possible competitor.

Bought for 179 million euros in 2017, Zenly is a social network based on geolocation. It allows friends to locate each other, and potentially find each other, in real time. Snapchat mainly got hold of this technology to develop its Snap Map, which also allows you to see where your contacts are located on the ephemeral photo sharing app. Note that until then, the Zenly application continued to thrive also in solo mode with some 35 million active users worldwide, compared to 120,000 in 2017.
