The British privacy watchdog, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), pins Snapchat for potential breaches regarding My AI conversational artificial intelligence (AI). If the social network does not address these concerns, it risks banning its chatbot.

Introduced in February, My AI is based on OpenAI’s GPT language model, which also powers ChatGPT. The AI is available to all users of the social network with the aim of discussing numerous topics, asking it for advice or recommendations. It is now targeted by the British data protection authorities.

Snapchat must take action to avoid My AI ban

After its investigation, the ICO provisionally concludes that “ Snap failed to properly identify and assess the risks to several million My AI users in the UK, including children aged 13 to 17 “. As soon as the feature was launched, the company warned that “ all conversations will be stored and can be reviewed to improve the product experience “.

Do not share any secrets with My IA or rely on it to advise you », then alerted Snapchat. Obviously, this is not enough for the British regulator. In a preliminary opinion, he ruled that the company “ failed to adequately assess the data protection risks posed by generative AI technology, particularly for children “.

If this is for the moment a preventive warning, the platform must now commit to alleviating the concerns of the authorities. “ If a final enforcement notice were to be adopted, Snap may be required to cease processing data in connection with My AI. This means not offering this product to UK users until Snap carries out a proper risk assessment », concludes the ICO.

Generative AI in the sights of regulators

This is not the first time that My AI has posed a problem. In May, Snapchat faced widespread criticism after the chatbot encouraged sexual relations between a minor and an adult. If the company strives to remind people that generative AI models are not infallible, putting them within the reach of young users does indeed raise questions.

The exploitation of conversations for the training of AI is also at the heart of legislators’ concerns, particularly in terms of privacy protection. In March, Italy did not hesitate to ban ChatGPT for several weeks, in order to protect the personal data of its citizens.
