Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2: the chip for the next Redmi is official

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform, integrated into a large part of the mobile flagships of this beginning of the year, starting with the Galaxy S23 series from Samsung, has been able to convince so far. And Qualcomm intends to obtain the same success with its new chip intended not for the most premium devices, but for smartphones and tablets located between the middle and the high end: the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2. The chipset takes the direct continuation of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, and the addition of a “Plus” mention suggests much improved performance compared to its elder.

As usual, the American does not skimp on promises. It evokes clear gains compared to the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, which we have not had the opportunity to experience to date. On the menu, energy efficiency improved by 13%, autonomy remaining one of the major areas of improvement for Qualcomm and its competitors. Using an eight-core architecture (one high-efficiency Kryo core, three cores dedicated to performance and four to common tasks) and a frequency of 2.91 GHz, the manufacturer evokes a performance increase of 50%. On the GPU side, Qualcomm even promises doubled performance, evoking increased stability over long sessions of use. The processing algorithms would also be faster, especially for image processing.

Beyond the raw performance, Qualcomm evokes the support of its Snapdragon Sound label, associated with the AptX codec, but also of a triple ISP (image processing chip) in the field of photography. The chip also supports the capture of images up to 200 megapixels, therefore no longer reserving this type of sensor for the Snapdragon 8 series. Finally, let’s add that the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 is compatible with wifi 6E and with 5G, using its X62 modem.

Intended to take over from chips such as the Snapdragon 778 and 778G, after a confidential Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 is expected this month of March. Qualcomm evokes two first partners: Realme, whose presence has however greatly diminished this year in Europe, and Redmi, the brand of Xiaomi. We can therefore hope that the conference of March 23, dedicated to the Redmi Note 12, will allow the formalization of a mobile equipped with the chip.
