Snapdragon 782G: a new chip to boost the photo on mid-range smartphones

We expected him at the Snapdragon Summit, organized last week, but he finally went it alone. The Snapdragon 782G is now official, joining Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform. But the new chip is no less interesting, with its mid-range positioning, insofar as it takes over from the excellent Snapdragon 778G and 778G+ and is called upon to equip mid-range smartphones, so more affordable.

A little more power, a lot more photos

This new generation of chip, engraved in 6 nm, is equipped with eight Kryo cores clocked at 2.7 GHz at the most – presumably a Kryo 670 Prime at 2.7 GHz, three Kryo 670 Gold at 2.2 GHz and four Kryo 670 Silver at 1.9 GHz, like the Snapdragon 778G+ (at 2.5 GHz though). Qualcomm remains modest on the promises of increased raw performance, estimated at +5% if we compare the 782G to the 778G+. The gain in GPU performance is estimated at 10%.

Supposed to be a little more powerful than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 782G is above all compatible with some interesting features. They relate particularly to photography, to which a triple ISP (image processing chip) is dedicated, to manage up to three photo modules. We especially note the appearance of support for 200 megapixel photo sensors, hitherto reserved for the Qualcomm 8 series – they are found on the Xiaomi 12T Pro or the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra, equipped with a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 Qualcomm also mentions the possibility of capturing images up to 120 fps in 8 megapixels, or even filming in HDR10+. To these elements is added the support of the Sensing Hub, integrated into the SoC, which notably allows automatic volume control based on an analysis of the context.

For the rest, the Snapdragon 782G is the immediate continuation of the 778G and 778G+ chips. Support for wifi 6, 5G via the X53 modem, Bluetooth 5.2 or the Quick Charge 4.0 fast charging standard remain in place, as does Full HD+ screens at 144 Hz. close to the chips of 2022, effective on paper, and which will debut tomorrow. The Honor 80, whose presentation is scheduled in China on November 23, will indeed be equipped with the new SoC from Qualcomm.
