In nearly a month, Qualcomm will unveil a new high-end processor for the next generation of Android smartphones arriving in 2023. Here’s what to expect from its performance.
On November 15, Qualcomm will present the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, its new high-end chip. The American giant is slightly ahead of its usual schedule, since it is just under a year after the release of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 at the beginning of December 2021. The first smartphones to use it, including the Xiaomi 13, should therefore arrive in China as early as the end of next month, rather than the end of December.
Before the Snapdragon Summit conference, we already know what to expect for this new chip thanks to information from leaker Ice Universe. The latter had previously revealed that Qualcomm would opt for a arrangement of hearts 1+2+2+3composed ofa Cortex-X3 Prime core clocked at 3.2 GHzof two Cortex-A715 cores clocked at 2.8 GHzof two Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.8 GHz and of three Cortex-A510 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz.
What performance for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2?
These new cores and configuration, powered by TSMC’s advanced 4nm etching, will give the chip performance a boost over the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 which launched this summer. Indeed, Ice Universe announces that CPU performance should increase by 10%, while GPU performance will experience a 20% increase. We can therefore expect scores of nearly 1,200,000 points on Geekbench.
Energy efficiency will once again be highlighted with a 15% increase. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 had already made big changes at this level compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, so the next Android smartphones promise to be more autonomous than ever. Finally, Ice Universe notes that artificial intelligence has been improved by 50%and the ISP (photo processing) will also see “a lot” of improvements.
If the changes may seem small compared to the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, the difference with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 of the Galaxy S21 or Xiaomi 12 is quite significant. We are talking about performance up by nearly 20% on the CPU, and around 30% on the GPU. Energy efficiency will be improved by nearly 50%, which is quite rare from one generation to another. The Galaxy S23, Xiaomi 13 or even OnePlus 11 Pro should therefore all be much more enduring than their predecessors.
