Flights resumed on Sunday morning at Munich airport, after their suspension on Saturday due to heavy snowfall which caused chaos in Bavaria, where rail traffic is expected to remain “massively” disrupted at least until Monday.

“Flights have resumed since 6:00 a.m. (5:00 a.m. GMT)”, even if “disruptions to air traffic are to be expected”, Munich airport, the second largest in Germany after that of Frankfurt.

“We therefore recommend that travelers who fly today check with their airline early enough about the status of their flight before going to the airport,” he added.

Air traffic was suspended on Saturday due to heavy snowfall during the night from Friday to Saturday which paralyzed transport in southern Germany, particularly in the Bavaria region and its capital, Munich.

The city’s central station was closed all day, and mainline traffic was completely stopped, as was public transport. Across the region, commuters faced train cancellations or delays.

Rail traffic is also expected to slowly resume during the day on Sunday, as snowfall has stopped in Munich, Deutsche Bahn said.

However, it will be necessary to count on “massive disruptions until at least Monday” due to the “major damage caused by bad weather” throughout the region, while certain lines, notably those to and from Austria and Switzerland, will not should not resume this Sunday.

“We still recommend postponing travel to and from Munich,” the public operator said.

Bus service resumed on Sunday morning, and some tram and metro lines are expected to follow, the Munich public transport company (MVG) said.

Another consequence of this inclement weather: the match between Bayern and Union Berlin counting for the 13th day of the German championship, scheduled for Saturday (3:30 p.m./2:30 p.m. GMT) had to be postponed.
