Kretschmann does not rule out lockdown – more and more 2G rules

On Thursday the federal and state governments will discuss how Germany should get through the fourth wave. But the countries have long been preparing tougher measures. In essence, it is often about excluding the unvaccinated from parts of public life. In many cases, the restrictions come gradually.

The federal states are gradually tightening their corona regulations. The background to this is the unbroken strong increase in the number of infections. As a result, the situation in the hospitals and especially in the intensive care units is becoming more and more dramatic. The federal states mostly introduce 2G regulations that increasingly exclude unvaccinated people from parts of public life. With the 2G model, only vaccinated and convalescent people may be admitted to events or in public rooms, with the 3G model also unvaccinated people, provided they can present a negative corona test.

In Baden-Wuerttemberg In view of the dramatic situation, Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann is not ruling out another lockdown himself. As things stand today, there are no general lockdowns ahead of us and we are sticking to the measures under the 2G rule for the time being, said the Green politician in Stuttgart. “Whether we get into the situation again that we have to go further also depends on the booster vaccinations.” He does not hope that such a situation will arise again. “But you really can’t rule anything out.” It could be that the size of events is generally limited.

In Hamburg The red-green Senate is canceling the 3G model for a number of areas and instead makes the 2G model mandatory. This means that unvaccinated people will no longer be allowed to enter restaurants, bars and clubs from Saturday. Indoor recreational sports as well as theaters, cinemas and body-hugging services are also affected, with the exception of hairdressers, foot care and medical treatments. For the time being, there will be no tightening in retail or local public transport.

In Bavaria the city has Munich The Christmas market was canceled due to the pandemic. “The dramatic situation in our clinics and the exponentially increasing numbers of infections leave me no other choice,” said Mayor Dieter Reiter. “Anything else would be an irresponsible increase in the risk of infection and, moreover, the wrong signal. Especially for all employees in our clinics who are working to their limits.” Reiter spoke of a catastrophic situation in the clinics. The pandemic officers of all Munich clinics had unanimously warned that the health authority and the district administration department had also urgently advised against it.

The Christmas market around Marienplatz could not be delimited, so that the number of guests and compliance with the 2G rule could not be controlled, explained Reiter. This is bitter news, especially for the stand operators. The administration is therefore examining a financial compensation.

Berlin is considering 2G plus

In Berlin the Senate is considering further steps to contain the corona pandemic after the introduction of the 2G rule. Preparations are being made for next week to implement the option of 2G plus beyond 2G, said Governing Mayor Michael Müller after the Senate meeting. While 2G only admitted vaccinated and convalescent people, 2G plus could mean, for example, that distances would also have to be observed, masks had to be worn or negative tests had to be submitted.

“We are now preparing in the Senate so that we have an additional instrument for the winter months to react to the situation,” said Müller. Institutions and their visitors should receive additional security. The exact form is still open. “We agreed today that we want to formulate a plus.”

That, together with Saxony and Bavaria, is currently hardest hit by the corona pandemic Thuringia also introduces a 2G regulation. Access to restaurants and events, for example, is only possible for those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered, as Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow said. “We have a serious situation.” People should now be encouraged to get more vaccinated. The Thuringian Cabinet also decided on upper limits for the number of participants in public events. A maximum of one thousand visitors are permitted indoors, and 2000 outdoors.

NRW sharpens the carnival, Saxony in retail

Saxony wants to introduce the 2G rule in retail as well. This tightened measure should apply from the overload level, which could be reached by the end of the week, said Minister of Social Affairs Petra Köpping about the cornerstones of the new Corona regulation. Exceptions are supermarkets, drug stores, pharmacies and other basic services.

In Saxony, a 2G rule has been in force nationwide for a good week, according to which only those who have been vaccinated and recovered have access to restaurants and other indoor areas, for example. Stores have so far not been affected. Once the overload level has been reached, the 2G plus rule should now apply to indoor events with more than 50 people. Vaccinated and convalescents must also be tested with this. At the Christmas markets, 2G should also apply in the so-called lingering areas where food and drink are offered.

Also in North Rhine-Westphalia the requirements are significantly tightened. In the leisure sector, the 2G rule will be introduced “across the board”, said Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst from the CDU in Düsseldorf. In addition to the catering trade, this should also apply to Christmas markets and football games. For carnival meetings and celebrations or visits to disco, 2G plus will be introduced, which means that only those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered with a current negative corona test will have access. There should be exceptions for children and young people. Wüst said that North Rhine-Westphalia did not want it to come to that like Austria or Saxony. With an incidence of new corona infections of 176.6, the most populous federal state is well below the national average of 312.4. For him, it is a matter of acting now and thus staying ahead of the situation.
