You want to sleep on the plane like everyone else seems to be around you? These five tips will help you fall asleep on board a cramped plane — and arrive refreshed.

You slide back and forth in your seat, flip through the range of films for the third time and look at the deeply relaxed faces of those sitting next to you with growing envy: It’s annoying when you can’t sleep on a plane, especially at night when everyone around you is dozing off. Because then time doesn’t pass and because you know that the first day of vacation will definitely be gone.

But even for people who tend to be nervous and restless when traveling, it is not impossible to get a few hours of sleep on the plane.

5 tips for the secret of good relaxation at 10,000 meters above sea level

1) Choose your seat as early as possible

Choosing the right seat plays an important role if you want to sleep on the plane. A window seat is best, of course, because you can snuggle up in the corner. Unless you’re one of those people who need to go to the bathroom more often and don’t feel comfortable disturbing those around you. Then you had better book an aisle seat. If you only get a middle seat, tip number 3 will help you in particular.

2) Pack a sleep hygiene kit

It has to be clear, dark and quiet so that you can fall asleep easily. As such, earplugs (or noise-cancelling headphones) and an eye mask are a must on board. Pack a bottle of lavender essential oil and rub a few drops on your temples before you go to sleep. This promotes a feeling of relaxation.

3) Don’t forget the neck pillow

Okay, not everyone thinks neck pillows are cool, but they definitely make a huge difference to your ability to sleep onboard an airplane. It is best to try out beforehand which one you feel comfortable with and which one fits you well. Usually you still have time and opportunity at the gate to choose one in a shop.

4) Drink the right things

It’s tempting to sip coffee and alcohol on board to while away the time in the air. But resisting the temptation will keep you hydrated and help you fall asleep when it’s time to turn off the reading light. You are also welcome to bring your own drinking bottle with water or herbal tea on board. So you don’t have to rely on a flight attendant to take notice of you when you get thirsty.

5) Make yourself comfortable

On long flights, it’s important to dress comfortably – in layers so you can easily adjust to the temperature on board. In general: You can make yourself uninhibitedly comfortable as long as you don’t bother your neighbors and aren’t barefoot. After the start, it is best to take off your shoes and slip into a pair of comfortable socks and slippers (the ones from the hotel). Getting ready for bed later, by freshening up and brushing your teeth in the onboard toilet, can also promote the process of falling asleep. And now: Happy sheep counting, the holiday is coming!
