Soaring costs – 418-year-old bakery now slides into bankruptcy

It is one of the oldest bakeries in Austria. But now the Weinhäupl bakery in Altheim has gone bankrupt. The reasons are varied.

The “Bäckerei Weinhäupl” has been in the family since 1604 and is therefore one of the oldest bakeries in Austria. Markus Weinhäupl took over the business from his parents in 1994. But now the end is threatening. Almost 600,000 euros in debt because assets of 95,000 euros are offset by liabilities of 565,000 euros (of which around 527,000 euros are attributable to banks), reports KSV 1870. Corona and cost increases The company was managed positively for years. “In recent years and during the corona pandemic, however, a significant credit arrears have accumulated with a drop in sales and an increase in costs, which can no longer be covered with current income,” said the credit protection association in a press release development on the market (energy and raw material prices). “It is planned to continue the company and to achieve a sustainable restructuring,” said the KSV.
