Google published its top search trends every year. These topics were particularly trending in 2021.

As in the previous year, Corona will also dominate Google’s annual review in 2021. But there are also many other questions and topics that have moved people in Germany. Google’s list does not include most search queries in absolute numbers, but rather shows the strongest increase in search interest compared to the previous year. In addition to the pandemic, at the forefront: football, the federal election and the total failure of the WhatsApp messenger service.

Sport, politics and corona

The strongest Google search trend in Germany in 2021 was the European Football Championship. “EM 2021” is enthroned in the “General search terms” category, ahead of “Federal Parliament election 2021” and “Corona”. The “Bundesliga” and “Olympia 2021” follow on the squares. The Germans also googled “WhatsApp disruption”, “Biontech share”, “Zapfenstreich Merkel”, “Gamestop share” and “Kasia Lenhardt” particularly frequently.

This is only reflected to a limited extent in the headlines; Germans google less in this category, especially for sporting topics. Instead, the trend in 2021 was strongest: “Federal Parliament election 2021”, which “Corona” has overtaken. In the short term, “Zapfenstreich Merkel” made it to third place. This is followed by “Afghanistan”, “Israel”, “floods”, “rail strike”, “Suez Canal”, “China missile” and “La Palma volcanic eruption”.

Germany loves these series

When it comes to entertainment, Netflix dominates. All of the most trending series in Germany listed in the top ten can be seen on the streaming service. In 2021, unsurprisingly, the South Korean mega-hit “Squid Game” will be number one. The US historical drama “Bridgerton”, which was so successful at the beginning of the year, and the French crime thriller production “Lupine” complete the top three. This is followed by the comedy drama “Ginny & Georgia”, the Mexican thriller drama series “Who Murdered Sara?”, The action adventure “Outer Banks”, the comedy drama “Sex Education” and the “Karate Kid” “-Spin-Off” Cobra Kid “. The fantasy series “Shadow and Bone” and the fantasy drama “Fate: The Winx Saga” complete the top ten.

How what why

Google has also listed the most common “how”, “what” and “why” questions. Particularly strong here: The topics Corona and WhatsApp, in between Queen Elizabeth II (95) cheated. These are the top three in each category: “How long is a rapid test valid?”, “How old is the Queen?”, “How long does a PCR test take?”, “What does a PCR test cost?”, ” What is the Cuba Syndrome? “,” What’s wrong with WhatsApp? “,” Why doesn’t WhatsApp work? “,” Why is Rüdiger wearing a mask? ” and “Why is Dieter Bohlen no longer with DSDS?”.
