Advertising on the internet annoying? A survey shows that the majority of Germans find advertising, at least on social media, even practical.

Influencers mark their advertising posts as advertisements, companies have their own channels and there are many people on Instagram, TikTok and Co. who want to advertise their products and earn money. A current survey by the digital association Bitkom shows that the majority of users in Germany agree with this. Almost two thirds (63 percent) of those questioned in the representative survey stated that they did not want to do without advertising in social networks.

The majority of those surveyed welcome advertising because it is through the ads that they find out about products and topics in the first place. A similar proportion (61 percent) thinks advertising in social networks is basically okay because it allows them to be offered free of charge. “Appropriate advertising offers many users of social media concrete added value,” Bitkom says.

Many find it difficult to recognize advertising as such

Accordingly, it is not surprising that in Germany it is above all retail that is active in social networks. More than two-thirds (68 percent) of the retailers surveyed have a social media account, and around a third (34 percent) pay for ads on the platforms to increase their reach.

Around a third (34 percent) of those surveyed, on the other hand, find advertising in social media annoying. This is not least due to the fact that the advertising is sometimes so cleverly integrated into the social media platforms that many users (46 percent) find it difficult to distinguish between advertising and “real” posts.
