Social protection: finance by tax or contributions, you have to choose


DECRYPTION – The social protection system shows a deficit of 51 billion euros in 2020, on an unprecedented scale.

France is the most generous country in terms of social protection. In 2020, France spent 872 billion euros to finance its social protection system, or 12,080 euros per inhabitant, according to Drees, the statistical service of the Ministry of Solidarity. The two main items of expenditure concern retirement and health, which represent 78% of the total, followed by unemployment (10%) and family benefits (7%), then the risks of poverty-social exclusion (4%) and housing (2%).

Faced with this amount of expenditure, the system has garnered 821 billion euros in resources, and therefore has a deficit of 51 billion euros in 2020, on an unprecedented scale.
