Social services – caring for people with disabilities in Ukraine

The situation in Ukraine is currently getting worse and worse. Disability advocate Hansjörg Hofer is responsible for covering basic needs and for the work of social services and institutions in the area of care and support for people with disabilities in the affected war zones.

Due to the increasing reports of attacks on the civilian population, including civilian and especially social and medical facilities and hospitals, Hofer also criticizes the limited escape options for people with disabilities, some of whom are dependent on care. With this in mind, he appeals for the needs of people with disabilities to be given strong consideration in the course of humanitarian aid. At the same time, Hofer would like to thank those social and medical institutions and their staff who, despite the enormous dangers of war, continue to do important work to support and care for people with disabilities on site. “My thoughts and the thoughts of my employees are with the civilian population in the war zone. In particular, we all sincerely hope that people with disabilities will not become the primary victims of this war of aggression and that their needs will not be neglected,” said Hofer.
