The “largest free-field solar system in Switzerland” is to be built on the Bern Airport site.
Flughafen Bern AG and the energy company BKW are behind the “BelpmoosSolar” project.
The solar park will produce electricity for 15,000 households.
According to the press release, the feasibility of the project has been checked: “Up to 35 gigawatt hours of electricity per year can be generated on an area of around 25 hectares.” The winter electricity share amounts to around 30 percent. “This shows that there are also suitable locations for large open-space systems on the Mittelland, which can be used to generate significant amounts of electricity.”
The initiators emphasize the advantages of the project: for example, the proximity to the population centers and that no overhead lines are required for the grid connection.
Bern is not the first airport to want to use its area to generate solar power. For example, Vienna Airport already has an open-air facility with similar dimensions. After the feasibility for “BelpmoosSolar” has been checked and created, the project planning and approval phase begins.
