Some caregivers think we must "forget Christmas to save 2021"

Emmanuel Macron has established confinement which should at least last until December 1. However, some infectious disease specialists are increasingly pessimistic about the growing spread of the Covid-19 epidemic. According to them, there is no other solution than to "forget Christmas to save 2021".

Last week, the Minister of Health Olivier Véran announced that "Christmas will not be a normal holiday" this year. He then explained that he was "hard to imagine big evenings", especially to celebrate the New Year. The second confinement, introduced by the government at the end of October, should continue at least until December 1. However, it could continue for several more weeks after that date. Will we have a Christmas and a New Year in confinement? So far, the executive has not confirmed anything. However, caregivers seem increasingly pessimistic about this as the second wave of the Covid-19 epidemic hits France head-on.

Many healthcare professionals believe it will be necessary to extend the lockdown beyond December 1. Asked Friday about RMC, Xavier Lescure, infectious disease specialist at Bichat Hospital in Paris, said: "Christmas, New Years Eve and family celebrations, it's folded".

Infectious disease specialist Gilles Pialoux, head of the infectious and tropical diseases department at Tenon hospital in Paris, agrees and said on BFM-TV thatit was necessary "forget about the Christmas holidays. This is one of the possibilities. Forget but to save 2021. I mean maybe this year Santa Claus will be Skype ". The majority of caregivers fear that the end-of-year celebrations with the family and without barrier gesture will once again relaunch the epidemic. It would be "too many times" while health services are already under pressure and some patients are being transferred to other regions or to Germany.

It could also be that the government is instead imposing intermediate measures in order to let the French enjoy the end-of-year celebrations, in particular by limiting the number of guests during meals. For now, the executive wants to be optimistic about Christmas and the New Year by recalling that deconfinement largely depended on compliance with the rules currently imposed on the French. "Our goal is for the epidemic pressure to drop so that we can do errands on time, prepare with joy, so that the conditions are created allowing families to reunite"said Olivier Véran in an interview with Sunday Newspaper.
