Some truant – The most important innovations of the motorcycle fair Eicma

No doubt: not only the Intermot in Cologne, but also the Eicma in Milan has seen better days. For example, Harley-Davidson, Husqvarna, KTM and BMW are missing. The mood is still more positive than in Cologne. The number of genuine innovations is also considerable.

Honda brings back the Transalp. The mid-range travel enduro can be seen at the Eicma as the XL750 Transalp. It is powered by the two-cylinder in-line engine from the Honda Hornet presented in Cologne; the power is also 92 hp. Full LED, 5″ TFT display with connectivity, self-resetting turn signals, different driving modes, selectable traction control and some other details show that Honda has high demands on the new Transalp. The new Honda CL500 is inspired by the Honda CLs of the 1960s – and 1970s. It combines retro charm with the latest technology. The parallel twin comes from the CB500 family; in the CL500, the engine delivers 47 hp. Thanks to a short translation, the CL500 should be alive and kicking. Steel frame, 19-inch front wheel, two rear shock absorbers, fork bellows and side tank pads are hallmarks of the half-litre retro bike. The Honda CMX1100T Rebel is bobber-style; it is the touring version of the base Rebel. It is powered by the same two-cylinder twin with a displacement of 1084 cc and an output of 87 hp and 98 Nm of torque. As a special feature, Honda supplies the big Rebel – there is also a 500 version – if desired with a dual-clutch transmission that can change gears automatically. Not only does it increase comfort, but also the weight, from 233 to 248 kilograms. As a T version, the 1100 Rebel has a half fairing, a windshield and a set of side cases with a total volume of 35 liters electric moped. It is aimed at the youngest target group and is intended for urban use. The energy supply should be enough for a distance of 40 kilometers, the battery is removable; it should be able to be recharged at home. Scrambler times three at Ducati At Ducati, the three Scrambler versions Icon, Full Throttle and Nightshift have been prepared for the coming season. They have a newly designed chassis, are four kilograms lighter and bring a number of technical innovations with them. In the future there will be a ride-by-wire throttle valve management, the basis for the introduction of traction control, the two driving modes “Road” and “Wet” and also for the installation of a quick shifter for clutchless gear changes. The installation of a curve ABS is new. Also new for the Srambler family is the equipment with a 4.3-inch color TFT display in the cockpit. It is intended for additional equipment with the Ducati multimedia system. Stylistically significant is the new steel tank; its flanks can be customized by customers. The Icon version represents the puristic idea of the Ducati Scrambler, the Full Throttle with its flat track look is decidedly sporty and the Nightshift has a number of classic elements. The air/oil-cooled two-cylinder engine remains unchanged in displacement (803 cc) and power (73 hp). All versions are also available from March with 48 hp for driving license class A2.Electric, but not electric at SuzukiSuzuki is showing the V-Strom 800 DE travel enduro in Milan; it replaces the previous V-Strom 650 and is strongly based on the still young V-Strom 1050. It is driven by a newly developed liquid-cooled two-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 776 cubic centimeters and a 270-degree ignition sequence; the power is 84 hp, the maximum torque is given as 78 Nm. The fact that the engine is equipped with two balancer shafts is remarkable. A number of electronic driving aids show that Suzuki wants to place the V-Strom 800 DE in the technically demanding competitive field. There is a multi-adjustable traction control, a quick shifter, various driving modes and a chassis with long spring travel of 22 centimeters; the seat height is still moderate at 85.5 centimetres, the ready-to-drive weight of 230 kilograms is also within the usual range. The mid-range travel enduro comes as standard with a 5-inch TFT display, full LED lighting, a three-disc brake system and spoked wheels. The same engine with 83 hp here (consumption 4.2 l/100 km) is also used new Suzuki GSX-8S powered; it is a naked bike. It has three riding modes, a two-way quickshifter and three-way adjustable traction control. The ready-to-drive new Suzuki, weighing just 202 kilograms, will be available from early summer 2023.Yamaha introduces adaptive cruise control – with a special functionYamaha is the first Japanese manufacturer to present a motorcycle with adaptive cruise control. On the Tracer 9 GT+, the ACC system is linked to the electronic suspension to keep the chassis absolutely stable even when changing speeds. For the first time on a motorcycle, the combination brake system on this Yamaha works with radar support, whereby the data from the six-axis sensor is also used. If the system detects that the braking force applied by the driver to the system is not sufficient to prevent a collision, it automatically increases the braking pressure on the front and rear wheels. A new feature on the Tracer 9 GT+ is a 7-inch TFT display. It offers three display modes. Connectivity goes without saying. With the help of smartphones, a full-screen navigation system from Garmin can be implemented. The Tracer 9 GT is also the first Yamaha to feature a third-generation quickshifter; the cruise control can remain activated when changing gears. There are further improvements in the semi-active chassis components, the selectable riding modes and the handlebar switches. They are backlit for the first time from a Japanese manufacturer. Yamaha has also revised the Tracer 7 and Tracer 7 GT touring models for 2023. Both get TFT displays. There are also new multifunction handlebar switches. The telescopic fork has now been revised, the front brake discs are larger. With the Tracer 7 GT, the improvements also extend to a new, significantly larger windshield, the comfort seat and the now standard luggage rack cubic centimeters of displacement and is therefore more powerful and powerful. With the Niken GT, the changes to the previous model extend to electronics, chassis and ergonomics. The new version, which has a tilt mechanism as before, should be available from February.
