We had been waiting for it for many weeks, the subwoofer mini format from the manufacturer Sonos is finally announced. As part of the brand’s connected ecosystem, this Sonos Sub Mini is a very interesting addition for classic living rooms.

Sonos thus offers an alternative almost as efficient, but much more compact than its Sub model. This miniaturization thus follows the trend initiated with the Sonos Beam and Sonos Ray soundbars.

An (almost) featherweight cylinder

Particularly small for a device of this type, the Sub Mini subwoofer comes in the form of a small cylinder 230 mm in diameter, for a height of 305 mm. The whole thing weighs “only” 6.35 kg, compared to more than 15 kg for the classic Sub box. Unsurprisingly, the device is available in black and white, with a matte finish.

Sonos obliges, connectivity is reduced to its simplest expression. Indeed, everything goes through the S2 ecosystem, either via the Wi-Fi connection or via its Ethernet socket. There is obviously no low level analog input, RCA type. Also, portable speakers, like the Sonos Roam and Sonos Move, aren’t compatible. For the rest, whether with living room speakers such as Sonos One, or sound bars (even the large Sonos ARC model), no problem.

For a small but powerful box

Where the Sub subwoofer does small miracles in relation to its size, the Sub Mini promises to be just as surprising. For this, it opts for an optimized architecture, using the principle of loudspeakers mounted in push pull. A first 15 cm loudspeaker thus faces a second 15 cm loudspeaker, the two operating in phase opposition.

This principle makes it possible to optimize the response in the low end of the spectrum, without increasing too much the size of the transducer, its travel, or the volume of the box. The layout with a central tunnel also optimizes air circulation. Unsurprisingly, the box is closed-load (no bass-reflex or passive radiator). Everything is powered by two class D amplifiers (one per speaker), and supported by the TruePlay room calibration system (on iOS).

Unfortunately, Sonos gives little technical data, except for a response up to 25 Hz, without further precision.

The Sonos mini subwoofer will be available from October 6, for a price of 499 euros all the same.
