Sony discreetly updates its FX3 and FX30 cameras: finally 4K DCI

After its FX3, an amazing professional camera based on the Sony Alpha 7S III, Sony continues the adventure with the FX30, a small camera that uses the same form factor while using an APS-C sensor, making the whole thing more affordable. Respectively 2 years and 6 months after their release, Sony passes the firmware of its cameras in versions 3.00 and 2.00.

4K DCI and 24 fps for filmmakers

FX30, FX3 and Alpha 7S III (A7S III): how is Sony's video range made up?

Compared to cameras more oriented towards cinema or television such as the FX6 or FX9, these small hybrid cameras are a great success with videographers, who are not content to film videos for TikTok. In order to make the FX3 and FX30 more suitable for demanding productions, Sony is taking advantage of firmware 3.00 for the FX3 and 2.00 for the FX30 to add requested functionality.

Once the new firmware is installed, these two cameras will be able to capture footage at 4K DCI (4096 x 2160 px) and 24 fps. Additionally, Sony adds support for anamorphic lenses as well as the ability to correct 1.3x and 2x distortion.

For its part, the FX3 benefits, in addition to compensation, from focus breathingmaking it possible to limit the change in the angle of view that can result from the modification of the focus and to further mitigate this effect after switching to post-processing.

Finally, Sony is harmonizing the file nomenclature of the FX3/FX30 with its higher range cameras to facilitate the workflow, especially when the FX3 and FX30 are used in addition to an FX9 for example.

Availablity

Available since April 12, the update of the firmware 3.00 for the FX3 and 2.00 for the FX30 is obviously free. Just download it from the Sony site and install it on your camera.
