In front of its investors, Sony said that the next ones will be devoted to reaching a new audience. By 2025, half of the PlayStation games catalog will also be available on PC and mobile.
Very often, the games published by Sony were dedicated to the PlayStation platform. Sony’s consoles have earned a reputation as exclusive consoles, which has forced Microsoft Gaming to change its strategy. The Redmond company has bet on GamePass so much by investing heavily in many publishers, including Bethesda, Activision Blizzard and King.
Now, Sony wants to ensure that more and more games from its portfolio are available on PC and mobile in the years to come. During a presentation to investors, Jim Ryan (President and CEO of SIE) announced that about half of its catalog will also be offered for PC but also on mobile devices. by 2025. So far, the proportion is significantly lower.
Big changes in a few years
According to VGC, a slide from the presentation shows that Sony has only offered about 10% of its catalog on PC so far, at least that was the case in 2019. This year, the proportions should change, but only about 20% of games are also ported to the PC, while the proportion of mobile versions will only increase slightly. In 2025, the ambitions are important: it is a diversification strategy that relies on several platforms to optimize revenues.
Sony expects a much larger audience. Note that Sony already offers its games on PC, such as Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone or God Of War. A few figures have also been shared on these ports concerning Horizon Zero Dawn (2.3 million sales, $60 million in revenue), Days Gone (852,000 sales, $22.7 million in revenue) and God of War (971,000 sales, $26.2 million in revenue).
Within its PlayStation Studios, whose objective is to design the next games for PS4 and PS5 (but also PC and mobile), Sony has more than 18 entities. The God of War, The Last of Us, Spider-Man, and other Infamous and Uncharted derivatives… the list of big licenses is long.
Sony had already announced that it would take care of mobile gaming, but there is also the advent of its cloud gaming or the famous new PlayStation Plus offer which will be launched on June 22, 2022 in Europe.
