On the occasion of IFA 2023 in Berlin, the Japanese manufacturer unveils the latest version of its smart phone compact, with the only real novelty being the modification of its photo sensors.

Sony persists and settles on the smartphone market with its Xperia range. We recently saw the brand offer a new high-end smartphone with the Xperia 1 V, and this fall, it’s the turn of the “compact” model to be updated, with the presentation of the brand new Sony Xperia 5 v.

A compact model for the smallest hands

This new model presented at IFA 2023 takes over from the excellent Sony Xperia 5 IV, released just a year ago. For this smartphone, Sony does not take risks and offers more or less the same design. However, the Xperia 5 V takes 11 grams compared to its predecessor, is a bit thicker, but also a bit shorter.

The smartphone still has a 6.1-inch screen. This 120 Hz OLED panel retains its 21:9 format, a habit with the manufacturer, which favors it for a better experience in viewing photos and videos. The model also retains a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is rare enough across the industry to be noted.

The battery is 5,000 mAh, with a 30 watt fast charging mode. Sony says its latest smartphone can regain 50% battery in just 30 minutes. The charger is however sold separately.

An improved photo part, but less complete than before

Regarding the technical sheet, the Xperia 5 V integrates a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile processor with 8 GB of RAM. It also includes 128 GB of storage, but this is expandable using the micro SD port.

The real major novelty of this Xperia 5 V is to be found on the side of the photo sensor. The previous version of the Xperia 5 had three sensors, this new model now has only two. Sony has indeed abandoned the telephoto lens, but compensates for this loss with a larger main sensor. The Xperia 5 V indeed incorporates the same photo sensor as the Xperia 1 V, namely a 1/1.35 inch model with a focal length of 24 millimeters, and 52 full-frame megapixels (48 effective megapixels). There is also a 1/2.5 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, focal length of 16 millimeters, and at the front, the same 12-megapixel sensor as last year.

Despite its compact size, the price of this smartphone is nothing mini. Sony announces a price of 999 euros in Europe, for a release scheduled for September 2023.
