Sony has just presented its new Xperia 5 IV. A top-of-the-range smartphone, which takes up the formula of its big brother, the Xperia 1 IV, in a more compact format.
While the Sony Xperia 1 IV and the Xperia 10 IV have been available since the beginning of the summer, we were still waiting for news of the missing model in this now well-established range. It’s done since the Japanese manufacturer has just unveiled the Xperia 5 IV, which presents itself as a more compact version of its most high-end smartphone.
A model a priori interesting since the dimensions of its big brother do not always make it an easy device to handle for small hands. With its dimensions of 156 x 67 x 172 mm and its weight of 172 grams, it actually slips more easily into the pocket. But when it comes to the spec sheet, we’re on familiar ground.
A lighter version
The Xperia 5 IV is equipped with a 6.1-inch Oled screen, still in (elongated) 21:9 format. 4K gives way to Full HD + definition (1080 x 2520 pixels), and we still benefit from image refresh up to 120 Hz. The panel promises support for HDR (BT.2020) in real time. The firm announces 50% more light intensity compared to the previous model, which of course will have to be checked. The set is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus and is IP65/68 certified. It is therefore waterproof.
The connection is always generous, since there is a 3.5 mm mini-jack port and a drawer for a microSD card (up to 1 TB). 5G, Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6 and NFC compatibility are always present.
The manufacturer still offers support for Hi-res files and 360 Reality audio. The stereo speakers are compatible with the Dolby Atmos standard.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 still in control
Under the screen, Sony has once again opted for a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, this time coupled with 8 GB of RAM (against 12 GB for the Xperia IV). A high-end SoC, which should ensure great fluidity in multitasking and video games.
For the photo, the firm relied on a triple photo module (Exmor RS) consisting of a main module with a 12 Mpx sensor and wide-angle optics (f / 1.7). It is completed by an ultra wide-angle (f / 2.2, eq. 16 mm) and a telephoto lens (f / 2.4, eq. 60 mm) dressing sensors of 12 Mpx each. As with its big brother, it is possible to film in 4K at 120 fps with these three modules, but also to capture burst photos at 20 fps with AF / AE tracking and HDR with each of them. them. On the other hand, it no longer offers the continuous optical zoom of the Xperia 1 IV.
The smartphone may be more compact, it still has a 5000 mAh battery. Good news since it should logically be less energy-consuming than the Xperia 1 IV, which had rather disappointed us on this point.
The battery is compatible with fast charging at 30 W, which is not very high. The firm explains that this saves the battery, and that it is still possible to recover 50% of energy in 30 minutes. Note that for ecological reasons, the Japanese giant no longer provides a charger or cable with its smartphone.
While the Xperia 1 IV is billed at €1399, the Xperia 5 IV is announced at €1049. A slight increase therefore, if we compare it to the launch price of the Xperia 5 III, which remained below the 1000 € mark.
