Sony wants to become the first sponsor of esports

Sony’s VP outlined the strategy behind its new line of gaming accessories. He would like to become the first esports equipment supplier.

End of June, Sony has unveiled the INZONE line of hardware, 3 new helmets and 2 new screens which are almost all already available. Behind these new gaming peripherals hides in reality a new strategy on the part of the Japanese firm to establish themselves in the world of Esport.

It’s in an interview for the media Nikkei that Kazuo Kiiexecutive vice president of Sony, presented the goals behind the INZONE range. The Japanese giant’s new strategy aims to appeal to “Hardcore PC gamers”. In effect, the parent company of PlayStation wishes to be inspired by the visions of Mizuno and Nike who are the first suppliers of equipment for athletes.

Many existing producers have their origins in PC manufacturing. Since monitors are designed to display data, there are issues to address when it comes to vividness and contrast. Sony is unique in that we come from the manufacture of televisions. We are proud of our image technology. We look forward to showing customers our immersive experience and realism. […] We’ll start at the top and learn what top esports players want. The vision we have in mind is that of Mizuno and Nike providing shoes for athletes. You can win prizes in esports. If a monitor’s response time lags even slightly, you lose. Sony products are not going to let those engaged in these grueling battles down.

The objective for Sony would therefore be become the leading equipment supplier for professional players. The brand wants to understand the needs of esports people in order to meet the needs of other players. Thus, the latter could settle comfortably in the imagination of esports fans and benefit from an omnipresent brand image during competitions. However, this strategy will depend on the quality of the material provided to players and Sony surely still has work to do on this point.
