With the upcoming WH-1000XM5, Sony is finally delivering a major update to its popular headphones. Here’s what we know so far.
We knew that the Sony WH-1000XM5 was in development and that we should soon hear about it, here is some first information about it thanks to visuals published by the German-speaking site Technik News.
The design evolves
As we can see in these renderings, the Japanese manufacturer is betting on an updated design on this new model. It is obvious, there are many aesthetic changes, where the Sony WH-1000XM4 was in continuity with its predecessor and did not present any significant development in this regard.
The Sony WH-1000XM5 adopts a much more minimalist design and seems to gain in sobriety, even if the previous iterations were far from flashy. We can guess in the images a thinner headband and wider pads, suggesting a gain in comfort for the 2022 version of the Sony helmet that has become cult.
The on and off button would be replaced by a sliding slider, while the physical adjustment of active noise reduction (ANC) would still be entrusted to a dedicated button, presenting the mention “NC/AMB” rather than “Custom “.
A nice gain in autonomy
The source also waters us with some indiscretions on the technical specifications of the helmet. Sony would incorporate a new driver to this one, but without knowing its size or any other information about it.
We know more about the battery, which would be able to offer up to 40 hours of autonomy with the ANC activated, a good performance when the Sony WH-1000XM4 is limited to 30 hours of endurance at best in the same terms. However, it will take 3 hours and 30 minutes for a full charge.
The Sony WH-1000XM5 should at the same time improve its ANC capabilities thanks to two chips dedicated to the task. The headphones support the Bluetooth 5.2 standard for wireless and have 3.5mm jack and USB-C connectors for wired use.
