With the Xperia 5 V, Sony could soon present you with a new compact top smartphone. That’s what we know so far about the price, release and specs of the little brother of the Xperia 1 V.

Sony’s Xperia 5 series fills a gap that other smartphone manufacturers have often left open in the past. Despite its compact form factor, the comparatively small mobile phone offers top-level features and performance. The 5th generation, probably called Xperia 5 V, is expected for 2023.
Most recently, Sony had already presented the Xperia 1 V and 10 V. The Xperia 5 V is still a long time coming. But rumors are already circulating online. But before we take a look at them, let’s answer your most pressing questions first.
When will the Xperia 5 V be released?
There is no official information about the release yet. However, Sony released the predecessor in September 2022 and it could well be that the manufacturer will stick to this time frame this year as well. Sony may then also use IFA 2023 to reveal the first official information.
On the other hand, a Sony device with the model number XQ-DQ72 received a certification from the Chinese regulatory authority 3C, which is held by GSMArena for the Xperia 5 V, among others. Such approvals can be an indicator for an imminent release. So we might see the cell phone in the first half of the year.
How much will the Xperia 5 V cost?
The Xperia 5 V came onto the market with a suggested retail price of 1,049 euros. Sony could ask for a similar price despite possible improvements in the processor and memory. This assumption is supported by the fact that the Japanese company has not increased the price of the new Xperia 1 V compared to its predecessor.
But there are also indications of a price increase. There is a leak of supposed Chinese promo images on Twitter. With 256 gigabytes of data storage, the Xperia 5 V should cost 8,999 yuan (around 1,190 euros). For a version with 512 gigabytes of internal memory, the pictures show a price of 9,799 yuan (around 1294 euros).
We know that about the equipment and the design
Sony is still reluctant to provide information about the next compact smartphone in the series. Some things we can see through leaks, others are just rumors or tips coming from insiders, leakers or those who know the scene.
design
It seems as if Sony has found the design for its own smartphones with the slightly rounded corners of the pill-shaped camera island and a separate button, which is probably the camera shutter release. Even the mid-range smartphone Xperia 10 V looks similar. Accordingly, we expect a similar design even for the Xperia 5 V – just smaller.

After Insider Ross Young the Xperia 5 V should have a 6.05-inch display. That would make it smaller than the 6.1-inch Galaxy S23. Since we do not assume that Sony will install a display that is perceived as worse than the predecessor, at least one OLED display will be installed again.
processor and memory
A benchmark appeared on the Chinese short message service Weibo that not only suggests a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, but also shows 14.85 gigabytes of RAM. Probably a rounding error. We therefore assume 16 GB of RAM.
battery pack
If Sony actually means the Xperia 5 V with the model number XQ-DQ72, the charging power is 33 watts according to the Chinese certification authority 3C. The cell phone may get a 5,000 mAh battery again.
camera
If we compare the cameras of the Xperia 1 IV and the Xperia 5 IV, it is noticeable, at least in the individual technical data, that only the aperture, focal length and field of view of the 1 / 3.5 Exmor RS sensor and a few software functions differ. There may be just one thing that is different between the cameras of the two new smartphones in the new generation. Then the Xperia 5 V could also have a triple camera with 52 + 12 + 12 megapixels.
The leaked promo video also shows the back of the smartphone. There we only see two cameras. So we have at least a hint of a dual camera. The only question is whether Sony will do without the telephoto or the ultra-wide camera.
