Sony has filed a patent for a new PS5 controller unlike any other, since it is simply capable of housing and charging a pair of headphones. Here’s what we know about him.
Sony’s DualSense controller for the PlayStation 5 already has a touchpad, adaptive triggers, gyroscope, built-in speaker and microphone. If a patent application recently filed by Sony is to be believed, a new feature could soon be added to this list: the ability to store and recharge headphones inside the DualSense itself.
First spotted by Gamerant, Sony’s patent application centers on the convergence of two leading hardware offerings: the DualSense controller, characteristic of the PS5, and the highly anticipated Pulse Explore headphones, which were presented at the same time as the PlayStation Portal accessory last August. As a reminder, these will arrive in France at a high price of 219.99 euros.

The DualSense controller of the future will be equipped with integrated headphones
Filed on April 7, 2022 and published on October 12, 2023, the document describes an iteration of the DualSense gamepad that can accommodate headphones either behind the touchpad or on each grip of the controller. The pair of slots would then allow the headphones to be recharged. However, these examples are not exhaustive and Sony specifies that the slots could, in theory, be placed elsewhere on the controller, at the front or at the back for example.
The document states that as “ portability and anywhere gaming are becoming more common and important, the audio experience is becoming just as important “. The goal of this new controller, according to the document, is therefore to simplify the process of pairing a separate audio device while allowing more efficient management of the battery life of multiple devices, and to create a convenient space where headphones can be easily stored without fear of being lost.
However, as always with patent applications, this discovery does not necessarily mean that the company is actively working on this project. It could well be that this controller will never see the light of dayand that Sony simply wanted to file a patent that would prevent the competition from using the same idea.
