soon a new tax on motorways and plane tickets?

A possible additional tax on motorway concessionaires, which could be presented as part of the 2024 budget, will have “no impact” on tolls, assured Monday the Minister Delegate for Transport, Clément Beaune.

There is a discussion on the taxation of motorway companies to finance the ecological transition and in particular investments in rail infrastructure, explained on franceinfo the minister, who had in the past said he was in favor of such a measure.

In all cases, however, the pages are provided for by long-term contracts between the corporations and the state and if there is a tax, it has no impact on the pages and will preserve the power of purchase of motorists, he explained.

Airline ticket tax

It’s not a good intention or an empty statement, it’s legally provided for like that, he stressed. Clément Beaune also confirmed similar discussions regarding an additional tax on airline tickets.

This measure could also be included in the 2024 budget, presented at the end of September, which will be devoted to reducing the debt and the deficit, a policy of employment and growth and the ecological transition, according to the minister.

I am in favor of the idea of strengthening the current co-contribution on flights, and this not for the principle of charging more but to finance investments in the ecological transition, indicated Mr. Beaune.

The idea is obviously that these taxes are differentiated according to the purchasing power of passengers and according to the distance and therefore the ecological impact, added the minister.

It is necessary that the plane ticket is sometimes a little more expensive to reflect its environmental cost, explained Mr. Beaune. Not to degrade purchasing power, but to finance investment, particularly in the rail sector and to allow cheaper train tickets.
