Apple has always opted for chargers with proprietary tips, but the context in which the brand is evolving pushes it to change its tune.
We all remember the famous 30-pin cable which was both big, fragile and counter-intuitive, which gave way to the Lightning. Where Android devices use the same charger, regardless of brand (micro-USB, then USB-C), Apple-branded products have favored proprietary tips, certainly for financial reasons. It was the same for the first iPads, wireless devices (mice, keyboards) and also the AirPods.
AirPods cases in transition for 2023?
This year, Europe came to shake up the habits of the Apple with a text of law which took several years to be finalized. The goal: a universal charger for all smartphones on the Old Continent to allow consumers to see more clearly, and to limit waste. It is, quite naturally, the USB-C which wins the bet and which will be the standard from 2024, signing the end of the Lightning iPhone.
Apple will therefore have to comply with the rule within these deadlines since it is the only manufacturer to still use a proprietary charger. In addition to the standardization of cables, which aims to limit the waste produced by the systematic supply of a cable with a phone, USB-C has several advantages that other sockets do not have. First of all, its rounded corners make it more solid and durable, its “reversible” appearance prevents premature wear due to inappropriate use. It is also faster for charging, as for data transfer.
The brand has previously switched its iPads and Macs to USB-C, for charging, as well as for data transfer. However, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, AirPods Pro 2 cases made in 2023 will come with a USB-C port. Which would go in the direction of the rumor that the specialist launched before, arguing that an iPhone with the same socket would arrive shortly. Theory taken up by Mark Gurman, journalist for Bloombergwhich indicates that the tests would have already started for a release on the market in 2023.
