Despite Microsoft’s best efforts, Windows 11 has still not won the players over to its cause.

That’s all told by the January 2023 Steam Hardware and Software Survey, representing a relatively large cross-section of the PC gaming community. Thus, we see that Windows 10 still beats all other operating systems hands down.

Windows 11 is still stalling with players (and the rest?)

Deployed more than 2 years ago, Windows 11 is still struggling to convince PC players, among others. According to the latest study from Steam, it is only present on 30% of the machines surveyed, compared to an overwhelming 63.46% for its big brother Windows 10. OSX and Linux are very far behind, respectively at 2.61 and 1, 38%.

However, it is not Microsoft’s fault for trying to attract PC gamers to its latest operating system. The promises of optimized performance, or even the more efficient DirectStorage feature on Windows 11 for better loading times, however, did not convince many people to take the plunge.

We find this observation elsewhere than on PC gamers, since Windows 11 represents today, according to Statcounteronly 18.12% of the market share relative to Windows, against 68.86% in favor of Windows 10.

An operating system biding its time

However, the adoption of Windows 11 is gradually taking on colors. We thus notice on the Steam survey that it gained 1.91%, which Windows 10 for its part lost. We can, among other things, correlate this development with the fact that Microsoft has ended the sale of Windows 10 keys on its site.

Even though Windows 10 will continue to be supported until October 14, 2025 and keys are still sold from other online retailers, its reign will inevitably come to an end one day or another, for PC gamers like for the others.

So it’s only a matter of time before Windows 11 finally wins the hearts of PC gamers. In the meantime, he takes his illness patiently, lurking in the shadows and ready to pounce on his big brother when he is most vulnerable to finally grant himself the status of chief operating system officer. But that probably won’t happen for at least 2 years. Unless the famous Windows 12 under AI infusion pulls the rug out from under it?
