Souping instead of juicing: why everyone is sipping soup now

Grandma’s good old soup is trending now. What used to be called “slurping soup” is now called “souping”.

My stance on soups is functional. They come on the table when I’m sick or in winter when I’m cold. Otherwise I wouldn’t think of saying, “Oh man, today I’m going to cook myself some soup.” For me, soups open up sumptuous menus with many different courses in restaurants. That’s probably why, after I’ve eaten soup, I always ask myself: “So what are we going to eat now?”. Really bad tongues even claim that soup is not a meal at all.

soup instead of juice

It was all the more astonishing to me that soups are apparently the new sparkling stars in the detox food sky at the beginning of the year. Instead of smoothies & co., people now spoon instead of slurping. Above all, nutritious soups with lots of greens, fruit and a combination of nuts and seeds are said to help detoxify our bodies, boost our metabolism and find our way back into balance. Souping is the name of the detox trend from the cooking pot. Logical right? Souping is the new juicing. And just like the juice cleanse, this food trend has also spilled over to us from the USA. Who would have thought! Gwyneth, Jennifer & Co. swear by the detox method.

Souping: What is behind it?

The name says it all: Souping is all about the soup! Morning, noon and evening. In plain language, this means that all meals are replaced by a soup. This is to detoxify the body. So, like juicing, it is a detoxification treatment in which – suprise, suprise – the pounds are said to tumble as a nice side effect. Great and above all so insanely, uh, innovative. Anything that tastes good and is healthy can go into the soup, i.e. all types of vegetables and fruit as well as various spices, legumes and nuts. As the saying goes: There are no limits to your imagination. Those who “soup” take in vitamins, fiber, minerals and antioxidants without end and largely exclude unhealthy fats and sugar. This pleases the digestion, which runs at full speed as a result.

What’s the point of sipping soup?

We eat and snack a lot throughout the day. Among them are of course not only laudable things, but often quite a lot of crap. Said crap is kindly converted by our liver and excreted through the bile and urine. But this only works really well if the organs are all fully functional. There are detoxification cures to give you some relief in between and to bind toxins and acids. However, if you are looking for scientific evidence for the effectiveness of such diet cures, you will not find any. So far there are no studies that confirm that juice or soup cures do anything for the body.

And which is better: juicing or souping?

If detox, then rather with soups than juices. Not only because then at least something warm comes into the stomach from time to time, but also because the roughage is better preserved and thus keeps you full for longer. Anyone who has ever done a juice cleanse will know how torturous that constant feeling of hunger can be. Because nuts, seeds and legumes are also allowed in souping, the body receives significantly more good fats and proteins, which in turn ensure that the vitamins can be better absorbed. Souping is the healthier alternative to juicing. In the best case, you use everything in organic quality for your soups so that the body really only gets clean food. And well… some soups are actually quite tasty, or at least they look that way…
