LSouth Korean firefighters treated dozens of cardiac arrest victims in Seoul on Saturday (October 29th) during Halloween celebrations. At present, local authorities count at least 146 dead and 150 injured. “At 4 a.m. (9 p.m. Saturday, in France), 146 people were killed and 150 injured,” Choi Seong-beom, a fire official from the South Korean capital, told the press at the scene of the disaster.

The balance sheet is likely to change rapidly. A fire department spokesman confirmed the incident earlier, saying 140 ambulances had been dispatched to the scene to attend to the victims. The drama unfolded in the Itaewon district, where thousands of people celebrated Halloween, according to the Yonhap agency.

The victims seem to have been taken by crowd movements in this district of the South Korean capital where Halloween celebrations bring together a large number of people. South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has called for hospitals to be prepared to receive the injured, the presidency said. Photographs released by Yonhap showed more than a dozen people lying in a street, rescuers assisting them as police cordoned off the crowds.

The emotion of Emmanuel Macron

According to video footage, around 20 bodies were covered in sheets or blankets, however, as rescuers made no attempt to revive them. Other victims were evacuated on stretchers to ambulances. Note that in South Korea, relief officials speak of cardiac arrest until a doctor has officially pronounced a person dead. The halloween celebrations this year are the first since the Covid-19 pandemic, in which South Koreans were forced to wear masks outdoors.

On Twitter, the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron assured to have “moved thoughts (…) for the inhabitants of Seoul and for all the Korean people after the drama of Itaewon”. “France is by your side,” he assured.
