Five million people in Switzerland have received at least one vaccination, as Health Minister Alain Berset (49, SP) tweeted on Friday. Until September 1, only 57 percent of the population in our country had piked against Corona. In Germany at this point it was already 65 percent, in France 72 percent. And in Spain already 78 percent.
Now politicians are putting pressure on them: The SP is calling for the Federal Council or the cantonal governments to write a letter to everyone in Switzerland. “In this, the federal government and the cantons should thank those women and men who have vaccinated against Corona,” says parliamentary group leader Roger Nordmann (48).
Catch up vaccination
The SP National Council adds: All those who have not yet been vaccinated against Covid, but could do so, “should be asked in the letter to please do so quickly”.
Nordmann hopes that the letter will have a similar effect to that of the British. Such a letter had had a very good effect there. “Why should it be any different with us?” He asks. After all, the vaccination is the best protection against us or others from getting seriously ill with corona.
And from the point of view of the parliamentarian, those under twelve should be asked to be patient a little longer. “They are less at risk themselves, but we also protect the children from spreading the disease if the older ones let themselves be poked.”
Support caregivers
With the vaccination one also helps those people who are dependent on hospital treatment for other illnesses, said Nordmann. Because towards winter, the hospitals are threatened with overload due to the relatively low vaccination rate.
Last but not least, the Covid vaccination supports the health workers, who have been doing everything for a year and a half “to keep the pandemic in check and to keep the number of victims as low as possible”.
For the SP parliamentary group president and his party, one thing is certain: “Thanks to such a one-off letter from the Federal Council and / or the cantonal governments to each and every one of us, the now necessary jolt can go through the population to make up for the delay in vaccination.”
