The CDU federal executive committee will soon be re-elected at a special party conference. CDU party leader Armin Laschet had announced that he would put his political ambitions on hold. Spahn, the economic expert Friedrich Merz and Union parliamentary group leader Ralph Brinkhaus are named as candidates for his successor. Spahn warned: “There can only be a future for the Union if we stop running and if we do more teamwork in a great many places.”
