MADRID, July 30 (Reuters) – Spain announced on Saturday a second death linked to monkeypox in the country, which would be the second death in Europe and the third outside Africa due to the epidemic.

Madrid had reported its first death on Friday, shortly after a first death recorded in Brazil.

According to an article by the World Health Organization dated July 22, only five deaths had been reported, all on the African continent. The WHO declared the fast-spreading outbreak a global health emergency last Saturday, triggering its highest level of alert.

In its announcements on Saturday, the Spanish Minister of Health reported 4,298 confirmed cases in the country. Of the 3,750 patients for whom he has information, 120 were hospitalized and two died, he said without giving further details.

Encephalitis associated with the infection was the cause of the first death in the northeast of the Valencia region, according to local media. (Report Joan Faus, French version Benjamin Mallet)
