However, the head of government left it open whether British tourists do not have to show a negative PCR test, as is actually required for all arriving travelers in Spain. For EU citizens, entry with such a test is already permitted without restrictions.

After months of corona lockdown, the industry is relying on summer business. The government is hoping for 45 million foreign visitors this year – according to Tourism Minister Reyes Maroto, that is around half of the international tourists in 2019.
Spain is the second most popular travel destination in the world after France and, according to official figures, recorded 83.5 million foreign visitors in 2019. Last year the number slumped 77 percent to below 19 million. The Spanish economy suffered massively from the losses to tourism, which normally accounts for twelve percent of the country’s total economic output. (AFP)
