MADRID (Reuters) – Spain’s parliament has ratified the government’s decree to reduce energy consumption, an unpopular text unveiled on August 10 which notably aims to reduce gas consumption by 7%.

Decided as part of the European Union’s efforts to free itself from its dependence on Russian gas, the decree introduces measures ranging from restrictions on air conditioning or heating to provisions on the lighting of public buildings and shop windows.

It remains to be seen, however, whether these measures, approved by 187 votes to 161, will allow Spain to meet its commitments to the EU, as suppliers have used more gas of late after drought limited production. of the hydroelectric park.

Spanish Energy Minister Teresa Ribera said the measures reduced electricity consumption by 6% in their first week of application.

Further measures are expected in September.
