Spain plans to introduce menstrual leave

Women suffering each month at the time of their periods could soon be considered “Anyone with a health problem” rejoices Cristina Diaz, singer and Spanish actress. A bill has been tabled in Spain to offer women who need it the benefit of sick leave days.

This proposal is far from achieving consensus, both within the political class and the population. Pilar, 83, says she is “horrified” by this idea, which she says will generate abuse. For Claire Vandaele, who suffers from endometriosis, this project can lead to perverse effects: “Long, heavy and painful periods are often a symptom” of a health problem that deserves to be diagnosed in order to be treated.
