MADRID (Reuters) – The 74-year-old Spaniard, arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of sending letter bombs to several institutions, including the seat of government and the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid, wanted to pressure his country’s authorities to stop supporting Kyiv, the investigating judge said on Friday.

The suspect, who used Russian couriers and encrypted emails, is the subject of an anti-terrorism investigation, the magistrate said, according to court documents made public on Friday.

Justice decided to keep him in pre-trial detention for fear that he would take refuge in Russia.

The septuagenarian’s arrest came three days after The New York Times reported that the investigation was leaning towards the Imperial Russian Movement, a radical group with links to far-right organizations in Spain. He is also suspected of being linked to the Russian intelligence services.

One person was slightly injured by a letter bomb at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid. A total of six packages containing explosives had been sent to targets such as Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and the United States Embassy between November 24 and December 2.
