Spain: the State grants menstrual leave of several days in the event of painful periods

Spain is set to become the first European country to grant menstrual leave to women with painful periods. Thus, Spanish women will be allowed to take up to five days off per month.

According to the daily El Pais, the Spanish bill would grant in the event of painful periods a leave of absence of up to three days. However, an extension of two additional days may be authorized, on presentation of a medical certificate.

This three-day sick leave will be valid for one year and renewable each year, according to the draft law.

Last October, Secretary of State Ángela Rodríguez expressed her desire to see Spain follow the path of other countries, particularly in Asia, which have chosen to introduce menstrual leave in companies and authorities.

Indeed, menstrual leave is already granted in South Korea, Japan, Zambia and Indonesia.
