Spain’s footballers are probably foregoing international strikes

Apparently agreements
There are signs of a turnaround in the world champion strike

Despite their strike, the Spanish footballers travel to the national team – especially because they were threatened with severe punishment. After the Rubiales scandal, the highest sports authority is now reporting on allegedly successful talks with the world champions.

After the scandal involving the association president Luis Rubiales, who has since resigned, the threatened international strike by the Spanish national soccer players will probably not happen. After negotiations that lasted late into the night, a number of agreements were reached, said Víctor Francos, president of the top Spanish sports authority CSD, early in the morning.

Of the 23 professionals nominated for the Nations League games against Sweden and Switzerland, 21 were convinced to play. According to Francos, the two players who wanted to leave the training camp after the negotiations would not be punished.

Association exerted strong pressure

As a result of the talks between CSD, the players and the RFEF association, which they sharply criticized, Francos announced that the association wanted to implement the far-reaching changes demanded by the female footballers from Thursday. A joint commission will be formed specifically for this purpose, consisting of CSD, RFEF and the players. According to Francos, the sporting future of the new national coach Montse Tomé, who is considered Rubiales’ confidante, was not at stake.

On Monday, Tomé nominated 15 world champions for the Nations League games on Friday in Sweden and the following Tuesday at home against Switzerland, even though these athletes, along with other colleagues, had announced their strike days ago. On Tuesday, however, at least eleven world champions bowed to pressure from the Royal Spanish Football Association RFEF and took part in the training course with the national team. The association had threatened severe fines and long-term bans.

World champion Jennifer Hermoso was kissed on the mouth by the Spanish association president Luis Rubiales, who has since resigned, without her consent at the award ceremony after the final in Sydney. The incident sparked a wave of international outrage.
