The area of application should be both domestic and international flights. The officials are trained in first aid, but can also intervene in the event of violence or other incidents, the Guardia Civil writes on Twitter and on its website. The Spanish “sky marshals” also receive training in negotiating with passengers and in hand-to-hand combat techniques. Good knowledge of English is also a prerequisite for attending the unit. During the corona pandemic, which was accompanied by numerous travel restrictions and mask requirements, violence against flight crews increased enormously.
