Spanish police use “Sky Marshals” on Mallorca flights

Following the example of the US “Sky Marshals”, the Spanish Guardia Civil now also wants to send specially trained police officers on certain flights who can intervene in an emergency.

The area of application should be both domestic and international flights. The officials are trained in first aid, but can also intervene in the event of violence or other incidents, the Guardia Civil writes on Twitter and on its website. The Spanish “sky marshals” also receive training in negotiating with passengers and in hand-to-hand combat techniques. Good knowledge of English is also a prerequisite for attending the unit. During the corona pandemic, which was accompanied by numerous travel restrictions and mask requirements, violence against flight crews increased enormously.
