It was in 2010 that Spartacus debuted on Starz. The series, signed Steven S. DeKnight, is simply the life of the eponymous hero, from free man to enslaved gladiator, then leader of the largest slave uprising against the Roman Republic. And it is surrounded by his real and faithful companions Crixus, Oenomaus and Gannicus, that he entered the history of humanity and that of television.

From its pilot, the eponymous Spartacus quest is launched – to find his captured wife and exact revenge – and the tone of the series is set. Graphic violence, explicit scenes and nudity populate the show, with slow motion and stylized CGI bloodshed to boot. Kitsch, gore and vulgar, the series nevertheless places love and camaraderie at the heart of its story and represents, beyond appearances, Roman society in all its depraved splendour.

Whether it shocks some or delights others, the series is at the time eagerly awaited for a season 2 but delayed following the cancer of the charismatic Andy Whitfield, alias Spartacus. The production then decides to give him time for his treatments and imagines a prequel without him to make the fans wait. Declared cured, the actor will consider resuming his role before giving it up definitively: he died in September 2011 at the age of 39, following a recurrence.

For the rest of the show, it will be Liam McIntyre who will play the title character, the “Rainmaker” whose real name we will never know but who will be remembered as a model of strength and courage, a tragic but absolutely mythical hero. Did it stay in yours? If you think so, this quiz is
for you. It’s your turn !
