ela. · Democrats eagerly awaited House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday to announce her plans for the new Congress. At 6:20 p.m. local time, Pelosi began her speech. After a sort of declaration of love for American democracy, the 82-year-old said she would stay in the House of Representatives as a regular member to represent her constituents. But she will no longer seek a management position.

The Democrats narrowly lost control of the House of Representatives in the midterms. However, Pelosi won her constituency in San Francisco for the 19th time.

As Speaker of the House of Representatives, 82-year-old Democrat Pelosi holds the third highest seat in the US government after President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. She is the first woman to hold this post.

During her speech, Pelosi couldn’t quite hold back tears. She began with a declaration of love for the Capitol, a building she first saw when she was six when she visited Washington with her father, who was a congressman. She now speaks as a woman, wife, mother, grandmother, democrat, Catholic and fervent patriot. American democracy is majestic but fragile. Therefore it must be defended. Pelosi recalled January 6, 2021 as she spoke about the fragility of the country’s democracy and paid tribute to colleagues who were forced to flee the House of Representatives that day.

“From homemaker to house speaker” is how Pelosi describes her political path.

Her husband Paul Pelosi was seriously injured in an attack on the couple’s San Francisco home a few weeks ago, and she later said it would influence decisions about her political future.

Republican McCarthy is raring to go

The previous Republican minority leader in the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, has a good chance of becoming the new speaker. His party nominated him for the post on Tuesday. However, McCarthy has to pass the actual election as speaker in January. Then he needs the majority of the entire House of Representatives.

McCarthy stressed that with the victory in Congress, the time when only one party ruled in Washington is over. “We fired Nancy Pelosi.” Pelosi said Democrats would continue to have a lot of influence alongside a “slender majority” of Republicans.
