Special correspondent: the report had gone very badly, a condemned man

3 journalists for the magazine “Envoyé Spécial” were brutalized by a farmer on September 10, 2020. The man was sentenced by the court in Tarascon, in the Bouches-du-Rhône.

On September 10, 2020, 3 journalists from the magazine “Correspondent”were assaulted at a report on the working conditions of foreign agricultural workers. An attack which, subsequently, was broadcast by the magazine. The subject of the report was centered on the illicit practices of some farmers who employ foreign workers. We are talking in particular about working conditions and housing.

During the broadcast, we can see a pick-up arriving at high speed with a man who obviously does not have good intentions towards journalists. The man who chased the team is called Didier Cornille. This is one of the operators concerned by the report. “You are sick of coming to people’s homes”, shouted this farmer while kicking to Thomas Guéry in order to break his camera. A scene that was fully broadcast on France 2.

Thousands of euros fine for the person responsible

On Monday February 21, Didier Cornille was condemned by the court from Tarascon, in the Bouches-du-Rhône, according to France 3 Provence-Alpes Côte d’Azur. Indeed, the assailant was charged withe”pay a fine of 1000 euros1 euro to each civil party and 400 euros of procedural costs to each journalists’ union”according to ozap. Note that SNJ, SNJ-CGT and CFDT-Journalistes were civil parties during the trial.

“I am generally happy, especially since the court went further than the prosecution’s requisitions”, entrusted Thomas Guéry, the cameraman. “This clearly shows that the motive ‘intentional assault and battery’ has been taken into account, he added. The journalists’ unions indicate around a hundred attacks on journalists in France over the past 3 years.
