There are more than 600 second-hand shops in Switzerland. Most of these are known for their diversity. However, a targeted search for an object often requires a little patience. That is why some Brockis have specialized in products such as plants, shoes or dog supplies.

More than 600 Brockis are registered in the online directory of the Brockenhäuser “Brocki Search”. Brockis have been booming in recent years. Christina Fischer, founder of «Brocki Search», also noticed this. Since the corona pandemic and the growing awareness of sustainability, interest in Brockis has been increasing steadily.

In the meantime, there are also specialized Brockis in addition to the usual second-hand shops. These concentrate on a specific product in their range, which makes targeted searches easier. Radio SRF visited three special second-hand stores.

dog brocki

In the Hundebrocki you will find a wide selection of colorful leashes, collars, feeding bowls, dog boxes and even books.

All items are carefully sorted and cleaned. Bea Kühnis emphasizes: “For me it is important that everything is washed and that everything is as hair-free as possible”. The loving presentation of the objects makes the visit a pleasant experience. You can feel the passion and dedication of Bea Kühnis.

For me it is important that everything is washed and that everything is as hair-free as possible”.

shoe stall

In the old town of Solothurn you will find the Schuhbrocki «Schuhstall», which was founded by two friends. Everything revolves around shoes in all variations.

The facility with country charm creates a cozy environment. The two founders are passionate about it and want to give used shoes a second life. The sustainable idea of a Brockenstube is important to both of them.

It’s always nice when you see that we’ve found exactly the right shoe for a person.

Since the shoes are all still in top condition, the prices can sometimes be a little higher than the usual Brockenhaus prices. A big plus for people who want to get rid of their shoes: If you bring your shoes here and they buy them, you get 40% of the sales price. If the shoes are not sold within six months, you can take them back or donate them.

It is important to the two founders that you are also advised in the Schuhbrocki. “It’s always nice when you see that we’ve found exactly the right shoe for someone,” says Sabine Falter-Lüthi.

Plant Brocki

In Bern, you can find the Pflanzenbrocki in the Loescher restaurant. Because this Brocki is in a restaurant, it has its very own atmosphere. It’s lively and loud here. There is a large selection of plants in the Brocki. Plant pots are also part of the sales offer.

Many of the plants that are handed in here bring a personal story with them and have something to tell.

People mostly appreciate that you still have to take care of the plant at home.

The nursing station also catches the eye. Every plant that is donated is repotted here and cared for depending on its condition. All plants are accepted, regardless of their condition.

“There are always beauties that we get. However, they often do not look the way you are used to from the retail trade. People usually appreciate that you still have to tend and care for the plant at home,” says Nora Hürlimann.

For example, the operators keep getting plants that don’t look quite as lush or have withered leaves. These plants are nevertheless included directly in the sales range. Plants that have diseases receive intensive care.
