Lhe speed limit of 130 on the motorways is the German Arlesian. A ghost that constantly lurks in the public debate, whose shadow appears clearly at each election campaign before disappearing shortly after. Because cautious Germany, marked by strict regulations in all areas and where traffic is limited to 30 km/h in many urban areas, has this singular particularity: it is the only country in the world – with North Korea, Nepal and Somalia – where there are no speed limits on highways.
The Autobahn looks like a Formula 1 circuit. It is not innocent, moreover, that in German we speak ofAutobahn (a Bahn being a route like those of Silverstone) and not ofhighway (a rhinestone being an ordinary road). On theOther…
