Spending time in the sun would protect serious forms of Covid-19

The sun has always been a risk to the skin. But it could be that he is an ally against the Covid-19. At Trinity College in Dublin, young researchers have made an intriguing discovery. Vitamin D is believed to be a natural treatment to protect the body from severe forms of the virus. According to the journal Scientific Reports, relayed by our colleagues from Le Parisien, solar radiation and the production of vitamin D would strengthen the antibodies. Several observations on patients who tested positive would have confirmed this hypothesis.

So what is the relationship between the sun and Covid-19? To reach these conclusions, the scientists made the connection between a vitamin D deficiency in a patient and viral or bacterial respiratory infections. “Our study adds further evidence that vitamin D could protect against serious infection. It is essential to conduct a properly designed Covid-19 trial of vitamin D supplementation,” said Professor Lina Zgaga, researcher at the head of this study. To reduce the chances of complications, it is therefore important to support your immune system with this hormone.

Strongly recommended daily sun exposure

According to the Agence Nationale Sécurité Sanitaire Alimentaire Nationale (ANSES), sunbathing for an average of 20 minutes per day would be “sufficient daily intake for the body” to better fight bacteria. By living in a sunny region, the treatment can therefore be natural. Otherwise, buying vitamin D in supermarkets or pharmacies could be very useful. The National Academy of Medicine had also recommended a few months ago to maintain a minimum threshold to avoid deficiencies.

For anyone with Covid-19, it would be important to monitor the level of serum vitamin D, that is, the level of hydroxyvitamin D present in the blood. The researchers clarified that the entire population is affected. Patients under the age of 60 should receive vitamin D supplementation of 800 to 1000 IU / day, as soon as the test is positive. While opinions are divided on vaccines, vitamin D may well be a new solution.
